King Kong is false Print E-mail
Published in : Mass Media Written by Ana Galarraga on 2010-04-22 13:30

kingkong.jpgKing Kong is false, and what is more, impossible.

The proportion between body and bone mass does not in fact increase in a linear way. As mass increases, the bones have to get proportionately thicker and thicker. So the bone mass of a mouse is 8% of body mass; that of dogs, 14%, while that of humans is 14%.

So a gorilla the size of King Kong would have to have a much higher bone mass to support his body mass, and that, of course, would give him a different appearance. With the appearance he had in the film all his bones would crack, poor thing!

Son Goku has never heard of Darwin Print E-mail
Published in : Mass Media Written by Ana Galarraga on 2010-04-22 13:20

dbz.jpgAre you a fan of Dragon Ball? If so, you’ll know all about Son Goku’s family history: when Son Goku became an adult, he had a son, Son Gohan. At that time, Goku was able to turn into a Super Saiyan. When he is a Super Saiyan, he has blond hair, blue eyes and is much stronger. He also showed his son how to turn into a Super Saiyan.

The thing is, later on he has another son, Son Goten. And Son Goten can turn into a Super Saiyan on his own, without anyone showing him how. So he has inherited this capacity from his father. Well, the naturalist Jean-Batiste Lamarck said in the 19th century that was how evolution worked.

Lamarckism was as successful as Dragon Ball, until Darwin proved that it was wrong. But we plan to go on watching Dragon Ball.

Be careful with dihydrogen monoxide! It’s deadly Print E-mail
Published in : Mass Media Written by Ana Galarraga on 2010-04-22 13:03

ur-botila.jpgWatch out! According to the information we’ve found on the Internet, dihydrogen monoxide can lead to death. So be careful. In fact, it’s the main component of acid rain; it can oxidise and eat metals; it erodes natural landscapes; it causes many car accidents; in the form of a gas it can burn; if you breathe it, it could kill you…

What is more, you can’t escape from it. Because if you reject it completely, it will kill you, and what is more, it’s in everything: in nearly all chemical substances, in foods, drinks and in most of the other products we consume.

Dihydrogen monoxide is in fact water.

Mystery of the moving rocks Print E-mail
Published in : Mass Media Written by Ana Galarraga on 2010-04-22 12:52

harria.jpgDeath Valley is between California and Nevada in the United States. Strange things go on there: rocks, even ones weighing 300 kg, move without anyone touching them and all by themselves.

The question of the moving rocks is very attractive for anyone keen on hidden or esoteric powers; really strange explanations that supposedly cleared up the mystery have more than once appeared in the media that cater for these people. But unfortunately for them, the explanations are much more down-to-earth. Down to the earth, the water, the cold and the wind.

In actual fact, American geologists have shown that these four factors play a role in the movement of these rocks. In winter the surface water freezes and the rocks slide across the ice when strong winds blow against them. Then, when the ice melts, the rock stays on that spot, far away from where it was the previous winter. So the mystery is no more.

I’m pissed off and I’m not breathing Print E-mail
Published in : Mass Media Written by Lorea Arakistain on 2010-02-22 10:13

mepico_txo.jpgWell, carry on being pissed off and stop breathing! This is because it won’t make any difference. If you have ever tried to frighten your mum by threatening to commit suicide by stopping breathing, you were being an idiot. It’s impossible. If anyone were to try and hold their breath to commit suicide, they’d never succeed. Even if they managed to keep going until they passed out, which is difficult and very unlikely, they would start breathing again the moment they fainted. When the brain detects that it hasn’t got enough oxygen, it activates a response that makes the system breathe normally. And as the individual is unconscious he or she cannot hold his or breath. And you can’t do anything about that.
