Research has been done in the United States to see how much drugs appear in songs heard by young people. The research was easy to do: they took the 279 most popular songs of 2005 and looked at each one to see if there was any mention of tobacco, alcohol or other drugs. And the conclusion: a drug was mentioned in nearly 42% of the songs.
Drugs appear in songs to a greater or lesser extent, depending on the type of music: they get a mention in 9% of pop songs, 14% of rock songs, 36% of country songs, and 77% of rap songs. Alcohol is the drug most mentioned (23.7%); then comes marijuana (13.6%), and the one that gets the least mention is tobacco (2.9%). All the rest are other kinds of drugs. If this research were conducted on songs of the Basque Country, what do you think the results would reveal?
