Physicist and Musician. At what point do the two disciplines become one? Physics is the science of drawing near and I use music to draw near to people. Neither of them are exact, perfect things. And I personally don’t like perfect things. You’ve given up teaching. It has never been possible to make a living out of rock and roll in the Basque Country, has it? But is it now? No it isn’t. Ken Zazpi has turned into a huge project, we went to the USA to record our latest disc… and I had the uncomfortable feeling that I was doing two things and doing them by halves. And I decided that the moment had come to enjoy Ken Zazpi. And you’ve been a teacher! You’re the idol of many young people in the Basque Country, and a typical teacher for the people of Durango, aren’t you? I don’t know. You need discipline in the classroom and the students know that very well. But what I really loved, apart from the ups and downs in the classroom, was to see these students at the concerts supporting me. A relationship is built beyond the classroom, a special one. How has physics helped you in music and the vice versa? Frequencies, harmonies… it helps me to understand many things about music, even though it isn’t necessary. And to satisfy curiosity beyond science, too. Thinking that time is relative, energy does not disappear… about things like that. At the Nou Camp stadium. 70,000 people and you on stage. Can science explain that excitement? I’m sure it can. They were very moving moments. When I looked up, a frightening shiver passed all through me. There is a special relationship between the Basque Country and Catalonia, and there was a tremendous exchange of energy between the audience and the band. You are involved in launching your fourth disc entitled Argiak (light) As you are a physicist, you must have thought about light hundreds of times. What I like most are the lights and sounds among waves. Light, in this case, desires, passions, strength, energies… in short, means hope. We try to express this light through music, even though it’s physically impossible. What physics can’t express, I express with music. Is Eñaut really capable of stealing the moon? If so, you’ll win a Nobel prize! I’d have lots of problems with the law of gravity, for example. But right now I don’t think I’d steal it for anyone; for myself, perhaps. I love it. It’s magical. For others the stars, because there are so many. And the sun? Light, strength, what gives us life. The moon, too, but the moon is more magical. Dreams that have yet to come true? Every day I dream, when I’m asleep and awake. I’m a great dreamer and when dreams come true, I have new ones. The greatest dream is to be able to go on dreaming.
Irakaskuntza utzi duzu. Euskadin rock and rollak ez du inoiz dirurik emanen? Orain ematen al du ba?
Ez. Ken Zazpi proiektu handi bilakatu da, AEBra joan gara azken diskoa grabatzera... eta sentsazio txarra neukan, bi gauza eta biak erdizka egiten ari nintzela. Eta Ken Zazpirekin disfrutatzeko unea zela erabaki nuen.
Zer eta irakaslea izan zara! Idoloa Euskal Herriko gazte askorentzat, eta irakasle txapa durangarrentzat?
Ez dakit. Ikasgelan disziplina behar da, eta ikasleek ondo ulertu dute hori. Baina ilusio gehien egiten zidana, ikasgelan gorabeherak izan arren, ikasle horiek kontzertuetan ni babesten ikustea izan da. Ikasgelatik haratagoko harremana sortzen da, berezia.
Zein modutan lagundu dizu fisikak musikan, eta alderantziz?
Frekuentziak, armoniak... musikako hainbat kontu ulertzen laguntzen dute, nahiz eta beharrezkoa ez izan. Eta jakin-mina asetzen, baita zientziatik haratago ere. Denbora erlatiboa dela, energia ez dela desagertzen... horren inguruan hausnartzen.
Nou Camp. 70.000 lagun, eta zuek taula gainean. Zirarra hori azaldu dezake zientziak?
Ziur aski bai. Emozio handiko uneak izan ziren. Gora begiratzean, barrualde osoan hotzikara batek uzkurtzen ninduen. Kataluniaren eta Euskal Herriaren artean harreman berezia dago, eta energia-transmisio handia izan zen ikusleen eta taldearen artean.
Laugarren diskoa aurkezten diharduzu, Argiak deritzona. Makina bat buelta emango zenizkion argiari fisikari zaren aldetik.
Uhinen artean argiak eta soinuak ditut gustukoen. Argiak, kasunhonetan, desioak, ilusioak indarrak, energiak... hitz batean, itxaropena esan nahi du. Argi horiek musika bidez azaltzen ahalegintzen gara, nahiz eta fisikoki ezinezkoa izan. Fisikak azaltzen ez duena musikarekin azaltzen dut.
Benetan ilargia lapurtzeko gai al da Eñaut? Hala bada, Nobela etxera!
Arazo ugari izango nuke grabitatearen legearekin, esaterako. Baina une honetan ez dakit inorentzat lapurtuko nukeen; niretzat, agian. Oso gustuko dut, magikoa da. Besteentzat izarrak, asko daudelako.
Eta eguzkia?
Argia, indarra, bizitza ematen diguna. Ilargia ere bai, baina ilargia magikoagoa.
Bete gabeko ametsik?
Egunero egiten dut amets, lo eta esna. Oso ameslaria naiz, eta bete ahala amets berriak sortzen ditut. Ametsik handiena, ametsetan jarraitzea.
