The day you’ve never looked such a mess, someone at home says to you: “How delightful you look!” They don’t mean it at all; in other words, they are using irony.
The two characteristics of irony are criticism and humour, and whether one or the other is used, the tone of voice and gestures indicate that what is said has a different meaning. Joana Garmendia, a philosopher at the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country, has explained these aspects and many others to do with irony. Without any irony at all we can say that she has produced an interesting piece of work.
