Contrary to what most people might think, calorie-free sweeteners don't help you lose weight, just the opposite in fact. This has been proven at the Purdue University in the United States.

sakarina.jpgThe human species adores the taste of sweet things, and natural sweeteners contain calories, and therefore help people put on weight. But you also get sick of them: when you've eaten enough, you don't feel like eating any more. Artificial sweeteners, by contrast, don't affect the mechanisms that regulate the desire to eat; consequently, a larger quantity is eaten than when natural sweeteners are used.

The research was carried out on rats, but the researchers believe that something similar will happen with people. In fact, surveys show that in order to lose weight, following a balanced diet that restricts the number of calories is much more effective than eating low-calorie food or diet versions of it.
